When the Tests Come Back Normal But You’re Anything But.

Some of the most eye opening cases I’ve seen didn’t start with dramatic lab results.
They started with someone who just didn’t feel right.
Joint pain that came and went. Fatigue that no amount of sleep could fix. Insomnia. Mild stomach issues they had learned to brush off. Feeling faint during workouts. A body sending signal after signal that something was off, but every test coming back normal.
Normal. Fine. Unexplained.
And yet you're anything but fine.
The cycle that happens more than you think
Here’s what I see happen. Someone comes in with a constellation of symptoms that don’t fit neatly into one box. They get referred. They get tested. Autoimmune workup. Imaging. Specialist after specialist. Everything comes back unremarkable.
A medication gets prescribed to manage the symptoms. Months go by. Nothing improves.
And the person is left wondering, is this just my life now?
I had a patient exactly like this. Joint pain. Crushing fatigue. Insomnia. Fainting episodes during exercise. Mild GI symptoms they had basically accepted as normal. Worked up for a connective tissue disease. All autoimmune markers negative. A medication started anyway. Months passed with no improvement.
Something was being missed. And I had a feeling I knew where to look.
Going deeper
Conventional medicine saves lives every day. I know because I practice it.
But here’s something I don’t think gets said enough, functional medicine testing isn’t something most doctors learn in medical school or residency. I didn’t. These aren’t tests we’re ordering on rounds or discussing in morning report. This is a completely separate body of knowledge that requires additional training and a genuine curiosity to seek it out.
I only found it because of my own health journey. My own questions that standard medicine couldn’t fully answer. So I started doing the work — continuing medical education, functional medicine courses, going deeper on my own time. And what I found changed how I practice. It’s not that conventional medicine is failing people. It’s that most practitioners simply don’t know this layer exists. I didn’t for years either. But now that I do — I can’t unsee it.
What we found
When we ran advanced GI testing and a comprehensive hormone panel — the picture became very clear very quickly. Two things had been hiding in plain sight.
SIBO — small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and significant hormonal imbalance. Neither had shown up on any previous testing. Both were driving every single symptom this patient had been living with.
What happened when we actually treated the cause
Within weeks of starting targeted treatment the shift was undeniable.
Joint pain improved. Fatigue lifting. No more fainting during exercise. Sleep returning. A body that had felt broken for years starting to feel functional again.
Nothing dramatic. Just the right answers finally leading to the right solutions.
That’s what happens when you stop chasing symptoms and start finding causes.
Why I’m sharing this?
Because I know there are people reading this right now who recognize themselves in that story.
You’ve done the tests. You’ve seen the doctors. You’ve been told you’re fine. And you’ve gone home and wondered why fine feels so far away.
You’re not crazy. You’re not dramatic. Your body is trying to tell you something that standard testing isn’t equipped to hear — not because anyone failed you, but because there is simply a deeper layer available that most people don’t know exists.
In my next post I’m going to break down exactly what those tests are — what they look at, what they can find, and why they change everything.
Because the deeper why always matters.
You deserve answers. Not just reassurance.
